You wake up, world’s pounding in your head
Somebody’s crying cause they wet the bed.
Did you go, before you slept last night?
I forgot, cause the beanies weren’t right.
Throw the sheets back, lay her next to you,
Then followed shortly by the rest of the crew
Daddy’s gone, found another place to lie
A knee’s in your back and an elbow in your eye.
Lying awake, as the hours roll by
Childbirth, ouch! You still wonder why
A blessing, a curse, or maybe something other
Does anyone know what it’s like, to be a mother?
Now they’re awake and running around
So much noise you can’t hear a single sound.
“I’m hungry!” “The dog’s done pooped over there.”
“Uh oh, guess I got gum in my hair.”
Take one, get him out to the bus,
Don’t stick your tongue out, spit, swear, or cuss.
The others--get em ready for school,
Don’t kiss me Mom, it just isn’t cool.
Now that they’re gone, there’s washing and cleaning.
Pretty damn hard, but is it demeaning?
Can’t stop, won’t quit, will you ever recover?
Does anybody know what it’s like to be a mother?
They’re back. Homework’s not going too well
Anybody got a diorama to sell?
Searching for meaning, apply the Gestalt
I swear, Mom, it’s all the dog’s fault.
The working, the whining, the fighting, and crying
I see no blood but I’m sure that I’m dying
The dog’s on the table eating all but the kid
I guess it’s alright, at least somebody did.
Teeth brushed, then it’s out with the light
Saying that they love you and they hold you so tight
A thousand choices, yet there’s really no other
Somebody ought to write a song, about being a mother.
