The Lighthouse A lighthouse does what it says; it is a house of light. A house for refugees who seek a roof of comfort. Light does what it came to do. It brings unconditional love and clarity. Storms may have high waves. The tide might be so high that the rock bottom of the ocean feels ridiculously deep. A depth that you can't fully see and comprehend. You may rock on the waves, but waves build you strong. I touched the bed of the ocean, and I thought the wave would swallow me entirely before the hot current brought me up to life. So I could breathe again. I was lost in the middle of the ocean, and the white, golden light was in sight. It was the light from the lighthouse. The light was so bright that I could see it from the middle of the ocean. When I saw that lighthouse for refugees, I knew at that specific moment that I was indeed in foreign territory, but I’d be safe and sound. Wave after wave pushed me slowly to the shore, where I could finally put my feet on earth again, until my journey reached the house of light. Some seek a lighthouse like this one. Some search the entire universe to find it. Some may seek their light for their entire lives without seeing it. Some tried to set fire to water, and they cursed the water for not having an atlas and learning how to navigate. Life does not come with an instruction manual to know how to breathe when your mother gives birth to you, does it? Don't forget, water carries its own weight. Water follows the wind. Do you know how to tell life where the wind shall blow, so you would know which direction to take? If you are lost and there is no lighthouse in sight, did you ask Poseidon for help to get through the storm? Water can get dark and drown you if mistreated, but water is also pure and forgiving. Don’t you forget that water washes away your missteps? Don’t curse the holy water for planting the wrong seed in the soil. Don’t forget that you were carrying your own light yourself all along. Don’t forget that you are that lighthouse for yourself and for others. I learned this myself when I put my first foot on the shore of the lighthouse, before walking through its golden door.
