A Friend Drew Me Closer to God I was helpless when I had to be strong, when giving up wasn’t an option. I was kept hidden from the world. I was not a practicing believer. I should say, my grandparents were sad that I was not going to church. I even decided to skip religion class in high school; I thought it was inconvenient and outdated. Most of the people where I lived were largely irreligious. I thought following the crowd was the right path to take. I was terribly wrong without knowing it. Did the crowd know where that road leads to? Was I a fool to follow it without questioning? I had no one to talk to. I paid a high price for my foolishness. Darkness kept falling heavily upon me. I had no one to talk to about this serious topic. After all, who believes darkness can truly attack? I had a friend that I met at my first job many years ago. She kept an eye on me from afar without me knowing. God just revealed it to me as I am writing these sentences. God has His surprising ways. I had no one to talk to but her. I had not spoken to her in a very long while. Picking up that phone and calling her felt like holding your very last quarter, knowing you couldn't get another one—no other chance. I had to toss that coin, and no matter which side it landed on, I had to put it in that payphone and wish for an answer. That coin was all I had. She answered the phone, and she saved my life from dying slowly under the attacks of darkness by drawing me closer to God. I learned God will show you to the world when the new character He built for you is ready, when you have faced your own truth, when you have gone through the breakthrough where God reveals who you truly are. Be nice to others. You may be the one who welcomes three travelers who turn out to be the Lord and two angels, keeping you safe and sound.
