Verse 1
In 1812 on the prison ship Fyen,
Four Norwegians from Stavanger found the Quaker way.
They read of the Inner Light, wrote a letter across the sea,
William Allen and Stephen Grellet came to set their spirits free.
Chorus
Inner Light, shine through the night,
From Chatham’s chains to freedom’s flight.
From Stavanger town to the western shore,
The Sloopers carried the faith once more.
Verse 2
Lars Larsen held the first Quaker meet back home,
Though the state church fined and persecuted them.
Cleng Peerson brought news from America’s land,
So in 1825 the Restauration sailed with the Quaker band.
Verse 3
A baby girl named Margaret was born upon the wave,
Lars and Martha gave thanks for the life God gave.
In Kendall they settled, some joined the meeting true,
Through language, distance, and the 1828 split, the Inner Light still grew.
Final Chorus (soft)
Inner Light, shine through the night,
You planted hope in the Sloopers’ flight.
From prison ship to the new world’s call,
The quiet faith guided them all.
