Luther declared: I stand by the text! Hoc est corpus meum. It is not "signifies," it is "is." You, Zwingli, are trying to turn the holy mystery of the Eucharist into a mere memorial, a theatrical performance of faith. My mouth eats physically for the heart, and the heart eats spiritually for the mouth. Flesh and spirit are united in this act of grace.
Zwingli replied: You cling to the letter, Dr. Luther, while ignoring the context of the whole Scripture. Christ is in heaven at the right hand of God. Therefore, his physical body cannot be locally present on every altar in Europe. It is a spiritual eating, a remembering of the sacrifice. Your view smells of popish transubstantiation and relies too much on reason, which you claim to despise.
Luther responded: I am not talking about the Pope’s "reason," Zwingli I am talking about God’s Word! When Christ speaks, his word is almighty. If he says it is his body, it is his body, regardless of where your philosophical, fleshly reason thinks his body is located. You cannot separate "flesh" from "spirit" in this way, for the spirit works through material things—water, word, bread.
Zwingli boulstered: But Luther, Christ says in John 6:63, "The flesh profits nothing." He is emphasizing that the reception of him is by faith, in the heart, not by the mouth. To insist on a physical presence in the bread is to turn faith into a magical act. It is about spiritual communion, not oral consumption.
Luther declared: Oh Zwingli, You are a fanatic! You turn the holy body of Christ into a nothing but a symbol! It is written, it is sealed, I will not move from the text. If I did not believe that Christ's body was truly in the bread, I would not be at this table. You are looking at the bread, but I am looking at the Word.
Zwingli says: I am looking at Christ's humanity, which is not omnipresent. We are in agreement on 14 points, Doctor. Why must we differ on this one point? Let us agree to disagree and still work together.
Luther: I cannot. You are of a different spirit, a spirit that denies the very power of the Word. I will not hold communion with you anymore Zwingli!!!
To believe is to eat and drink.
